News Check out our new Gallery Page Rock Star Baby ‘Rock Star Baby’, the new range of Birkenstocks designed by the Bon Jovi drummer Ticco Torres, has just been released in Australia.
Skulls, studs and Swaroski crystals have been used throughout the range combined with black leather, suede and denim to create matching styles for women, men and kids too. Each design also includes the renowned Birkenstock footbed that provides a brilliant harmony between ‘Rock’n’Roll style and comfort. Ticco Torres’ inspiration for designing these ultra-cool slides started when he realised that there was a lack of footwear for kids besides the generic pastel colours; he wanted to come up with something completely hip and different for kids and offer the same styles for older groupies too! All styles are available to order exclusively on line shortly or through selected Birkenstock retailers.
Crossing the Sahara Alone: A Woman’s Journey Media Coverage
June 4, 2007
Australian adventurer Paula Constant has walked further than any other expedition across the Sahara. Paula chose one of the world’s most challenging paths, and she chose to wear Birkenstock.
In August 2006, Paula set out on her quest to become the first woman to walk solo across the Sahara. The fact that Paula is doing the journey entirely on foot, is what separates her from other adventurers. Over the past 9 months, she has walked over 8,000 kilometres and will return to Africa in September this year to continue her journey to reach Cairo.

The 33 year old former school teacher from Melbourne set out on her lonely journey accompanied by a camel train and local Arabic guides, determined to do something different with her life. “I was tired of simply working 9-5 for someone else and wanted to do something that I was passionate about... travelling and writing”. Paula’s quest has led to offers from publishers to write about her adventures, so she truly is living the dream.
The journey has been far from smooth, however Paula’s motto is to “never give up”. She has survived serious illness, threats, water shortages and has come out the other side smiling with locals viewing her as “the strange white woman with the camels”.
Over the past 9 months, Paula has walked from Mauritania in the West to Niger in Central Northern Africa. However, local authorities have blocked her from walking any further due to the rebellion in the North and insisted that she leave the country until the situation is under control. Paula is now en-route to Australia, with a guarantee from the local African government that they will welcome her back to continue her journey in September. Once complete, Paula will have walked more than 11,000 kilometres.

Paula believes that “everywhere is walking distance if you have the time and the right pair of shoes” – which in her case, is a pair of Birkenstock’s. Prior to the Sahara, Paula walked from London to Africa on foot and has plans for further treks around the globe… one step at a time!
