Birki’s footwear is developed and produced exclusively in Germany. Birki’s stands for the highest quality, innovation and design and they continually challenge themselves to identify even better development standards.
The anatomically moulded footbed forms the foundation of all Birki’s footwear. The footbed, which is made using only the finest quality materials, offers fantastic shock absorption, comfort and support.
Birki Schuh GmbH was founded in 1993 in Germany by Stephan Birkenstock who remains General Manager of the brand today. Birki’s featured the famous cork-latex footbed right from the start as well as a collection of professional and leisure clogs made from ALPRO® - foam with exchangeable, replaceable, anatomically correct contoured footbeds.
In 1995 Birki Schuh GmbH developed a unique method of ‘direct molding’. This method fuses the upper material and the footbed without using stitching or adhesives. The result is a durable, comfortable, lightweight sandal perfect for wet conditions.
In 1999 Birki Schuh GmbH was the first manufacturer worldwide to develop a clog made of ALPRO® - Cell (EVA), style name Fun-Birki. This clog received such an enthusiastic response that in 2005 the Fun-Birki received the Red Dot Design Award for product design in New York.
In 2004 Birki’s created its first adjustable functional styles featuring flip-over, removable heel straps, clip-on accessories and removable instep straps. The Kids collection for the first time was presented as a separate entity with the launch of the Birki kid’s catalogue.
In 2007 a collection featuring the Birki’s soft footbed was launched. Developed around the idea of an anatomically moulded cork-latex centre, the soft footbed features a properly sized, permanently elastic latex cushion – for amazingly soft comfort and support.
And now through to today…Birki’s offers a wide range of sandals, slippers and clogs in a wide variety of colours, prints and designs to suit every situation.

Ecological responsibility is a top priority for Birki’s. Since its foundation, Birki’s has been committed to saving valuable resources in their manufacturing processes.
Manufacturing: Birki’s has managed to optimise their manufacturing process so that deficient production and waste could be reduced to a minimum. Birki’s uses solvent-free adhesives for the production of cork based styles and for the past ten years Birki’s has been producing their EVA/PU sandals completely without the use of adhesives. Birki’s has managed to develop a production method where the upper and sole are fused together. In this process only 100% CFC-free waterbased propellants are used.
Cork: Most Birki’s footbeds are made of a cork/latex mixture and only pure, high quality cork is used. The cork is harvested from the Portuguese cork-oak tree and is done by hand to ensure both the tree and the bark are carefully looked after.
Solar: With the help from solar thermal technology, Birki’s uses solar power to heat the water needed for their buckle production.
Energy: Birki’s believes in smart energy use with their production. They have reduced their overall energy use by approximately 90% and have also managed to transfer residual heat to be used in the drying process of the cork footbeds.
Recycling: The shoeboxes and shipping cartons used by Birki’s are fully recyclable. There is always some leftover waste material in the production of clogs, sandals and punched out soles made of PU and EVA. This waste material is re-used for things like covering the floors of playgrounds and sports arenas.
Eco Compensation Areas: Birki’s creates large ecological compensation areas for each building they use. Today all of the compensation areas are officially designated nature reserves.

Quality is of the upmost importance. Birki’s footwear is made exclusively in Germany. Known for precision, craftsmanship, high standards and quality assurance, German manufacturing means consistent quality products for consumers worldwide.
Birki’s production development and sales team work closely together and double check the quality of their products throughout the production process. Utilising state of the art facilities with the highest standards, Birki’s produces the best results the German shoe industry currently has to offer.
