Our Materials: Natural Leather
Natural leather is used throughout a range of Birkenstock products. It ensures great comfort, breathability, and insulation.

Birkenstock leather is uniquely produced to a uniform thickness of 3mm which ensures its longevity.
Thanks to a gentle production process, each cut of leather remains unique. This allows the material to retain its natural, skin friendly qualities.
Over time, leather uppers will adapt to the movement and warmth of your feet and will gradually be re-shaped to a form and fit that is uniquely yours. As our sandals and clogs are not lined, you may initially find the underside slightly abrasive against your skin.
Birkenstock's natural and smooth leathers are dyed to have an even finish and consistent colour. The evenness of the dying process is especially noticeable with lighter colours.
Over time, our leathers will show signs of wear and will benefit from the Birkenstock Leather Conditioner, to protect and nourish while restoring the colour.
Our natural leather uppers are also offered in a variety of finishes, including Vintage, High Shine, Grained and Smooth leather variations. Our newly updated professional range also uses natural leather with a polyurethane (PU) coating.
Each season, new colours and styles are introduced so that there's something for everyone.
How to Care For Natural Leather
Depending on the finish applied to the natural leather there are a few different methods of care, with the Footbed and Shoe Cleaner being the main product used to clean and maintain Natural Leather. Additionally, our Leather Conditioner provides nourishment while your wear your Birkenstocks. For more in-depth information, you can view our Shoe Care guides here.
