Our Materials: EVA

Our Materials: EVA

2 min read

EVA, otherwise known an Ethylene Vinyl Acetate, is a high-quality elastic material that provides superior cushioning whilst being lightweight. You can find EVA used throughout our range; most Birkenstock footwear has an EVA outsole whilst EVA models are molded from a single piece of material.

Our EVA sandals are made with the beach, pool, and occasional wear in mind. Their one-piece molded construction makes them water friendly whilst providing the support and comfort Birkenstocks are known for.

However, due to the nature of EVA there are a few important things to remember. Firstly, we don't recommend an EVA pair of sandals to be worn for extended amounts of time as the softer material is not suitable for prolonged street-wear. Secondly, if you do decide to take them to the beach or pool, it's important to remember that EVA can shrink when exposed to extreme heat or direct sunlight; this is why we advise keeping them in the shade or inside a cooler environment.

Another factor of EVA, being softer and more malleable than cork, is that the material will yield to pressure and start to mold to your foot over time. When purchasing a new pair, you will probably notice the difference in size when compared to an older, worn in pair. The heat from your body as well as the surfaces you walk will contribute to this; it’s a gradual process you won’t notice until comparing the fit with a new pair. This process is true of all Birkenstock footbeds, but especially true of EVA.

How to Care For EVA

To clean a pair of EVA sandals, we recommend using mild soapy water. Do note that the water shouldn't be hot as this can cause them to shrink. Once the sandals have been washed, place them to dry in a cool shaded place away from direct sunlight.
